Veles Workshop · Moscow · since 2008
Trophy-grade rugs from brown bear, wolf and lynx. Full factory tanning, hand-mounted heads, legal harvest documents with every piece.
The workshop
We have been making skin rugs since 2008. Every hide passes the full factory cycle — degreasing, pickling, tanning, fatliquoring — before a craftsman ever touches it.
That is the whole difference. A properly tanned hide stays soft for decades: it does not dry out, crack along the leather side or shed fur. A cheap hide looks fine in photos and turns into cardboard in three years.
What we make
Each piece is one of a kind: size, shade and fur pattern never repeat. Below are the usual formats — current stock is sent on request.
130 to 260 cm along the spine. Mounted head with closed or open mouth, or a flat rug with no head.
from ₽90,000
Brown bear, moose, wild boar, wolf or lynx head on a solid oak shield. The classic hunting trophy for a study.
from ₽60,000
Smaller trophies for a study or bedroom. Winter fur, mounted head.
from ₽85,000
Craft
We take nothing but winter-harvested animals with full undercoat, sourced directly from hunters in Kamchatka, Siberia and the Russian Far East.
Degreasing, pickling, chrome tanning and fatliquoring. After this the leather is no longer biological material — there is nothing left to rot or smell.
The skull is replaced with an anatomical form. Nose, lips and eyelids are rebuilt; teeth and claws are the animal's own, polished by hand.
Dense felt backing across the whole area, natural velvet edging in a tone matching the fur. Double-stitched with nylon thread.
CITES
Bear species are listed under CITES: brown bear in Appendix II, Asian black bear in Appendix I. Any shipment out of Russia requires an export permit, and your country requires an import permit of its own.
We handle the Russian paperwork. Before you pay anything, we check whether import into your country is possible at all — and if it is not, we tell you straight away. Permits usually take two to six weeks, which is longer than the shipping itself.
No. Odour only comes from raw or home-tanned hides. After the full factory cycle no fats or proteins remain in the leather. The finished rug is odourless, hypoallergenic and safe around children.
Yes. Brown bear is a game species in Russia, harvested under licence, and is not on the Russian Red List. Every piece comes with documents proving legal harvest. Cross-border movement additionally requires CITES permits.
Always. We film the specific hide from every angle — full view, head close-up, fur and the leather side — and send it to you on WhatsApp before you decide.
Decades, at normal indoor humidity and out of direct sunlight. Hides from the 1970s regularly come back to us for restoration in working condition.
